Hello all and happy Fall!
With the holidays fast approaching I thought I would share how I approach the process of interior selections.
When I start decorating for Christmas I always start with the tree. It is the foundation for the rest of my decorations. The size, color, and shape are important to the finished look. After all your eye goes immediately to the tree first, then to the twinkling lights in the boughs and possibly a dancing Santa or two. It is also the most expensive item in my Christmas decor.
My tree was a long-term investment. I selected it carefully to last many years. Why am I writing about my Christmas tree? There is a good explanation I promise.
Just as my Christmas tree was selected for longevity, so should many of your finishes for your new home. Flooring, cabinetry, and counter tops are the back ground, they are the main anchor to your design. They are best selected to be timeless and neutral. The soft furnishings that are easily replaced such as rugs, couches, tables and knickknacks should be allowed to steal the show! Those items just like the silver bows you may love this Christmas on your tree, might be replaced next year with navy stars. We evolve and change as humans. That gorgeous patterned tile you’re in love with this year might be an eyesore five years from now. Or more often in my case, when my kids were young my tastes were often forced to change due to broken or stained items that their cute little clumsy hands would touch, smear, or paint!
In closing take a deep breath, think about how you will stage and decorate your home. Selecting a beautiful neutral counter top that will display all your beautiful knickknacks in this year’s “it” color, will still look just as stunning with the new “it” color in five to ten years.
